Abstract

Saussurea subgenus Amphilaena, one of the four accepted subgenera of Saussurea is assessed here for its taxonomic position, nomenclature, distribution and diversity in India. We accept eight species of this subgenus in India with mainly alpine distribution. Comprehensive nomenclature notes are provided based on careful analyses of the protologues, original materials, live specimens and relevant literature. Lectotypes are designated wherever necessary and inconsistent type information in earlier literature has been corrected. Taxonomic confusions in identity of certain species have been resolved and detailed morphological comparisons are provided to avoid future misidentifications. Distribution data has been updated through examination of herbarium as well as live specimens. Detailed descriptions of the species and taxonomic key are provided for easy identification in the field along with their distribution map.
