Abstract

Chlorophyceae comprises a morphologically varied group of photosynthetic organisms known as green algae. This is the largest and heterogeneous group of algae extending in size from microscopic unicellular or coenocyte to large colonies and broad filamentous forms. The present work the taxonomic diversity of Chlorophyceae is reported first time from Mamchari Dam over a period of two years. with two sites, and once a month. During this study the algal sample collected from two site of the dam and identified on the basis of morphological characteristic. Study exposed the presence of 23 algal species of 14 genera belonging to 11 families and 6 orders of Chlorophyceae group. Genera reported such as Chlorococcum, Chlorella, Pediastrum, Chlamydomonas, Volvox, Closterium, Cosmarium, Spirogyra, Zygnema, Coleocheate, Oedogonium, Chara and Nitella. Thallus diversity of morphology of these taxa ranges from non-motile (Chlorella) to well organized branched filamentous thallus of Chara through coenobial (Scenedesmus, Pediastrum) to unbranched filamentous forms (Spirogyra and Oedogonium). All the members of Chlorophyceae documented during this study at species level. The divergent potentials of green algae in the present area determine that a significant measure of work is required with respect to green algae and normal for their region. The study delivers significant baseline data for future ecological and algal farming research.
