Abstract

The Achyranthes aspera is belong to family Amaranthaceae. It is medicinally important taxon. The anatomical study of stem, petiole and leaf of this species were documented. The important characters of stem anatomy, which include angular and ridged outline, collenchyma and chlorenchyma layer, sclerenchyma, cambium, consist of two medullary bundles, medullary rays, vascular bundles, vessels and rayless xylem were documented. The Medullary bundles of stem is important feature of A. aspera species. Petiole has a crescent shaped with 5 number of vascular bundles were observed. Glandular trichomes were observed in stem, petiole and leaf anatomy. Leaf is dorsiventral with 4 number of vascular bundles were found in ground tissue. The number of vascular and medullary bundles as well as types of trichome is most significant for identification of this species. During the study, we have observed the unique characteristic are two more extra vascular bundles on the upper side of leaf. Stomatal types are anomocytic, anisocytic and paracytic. The trichomes are unicellular and multicellular as well as glandular. The studied features of A. aspera stem, petiole and leaf will be useful for identification and authentication of the plant material.
