Morphological differences of two closely related species of Ammi visnaga (L.) Lam. & Ammi majus L. of CMPRH, Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu
Abstract
Medicinal plants are crucial for the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare, drawing significant interest. However, closely related species such as Ammi visnaga (L.) Lam. and Ammi majus L. are challenging to differentiate with the naked eye. Misidentification of these plants can lead to negative consequences for pharmaceutical companies. Ammi visnaga (L.) Lam. and Ammi majus L. are prevalent species in India. Their morphological similarities make field survey identification and taxonomic validation challenging. Accurate identification is particularly crucial for these medicinally significant species. Observations and Present study has been carried out to identification of two Ammi species on the basis of morphological characters viz., stem, leaves, flowers and fruits (Seeds). We recorded morphological characters for 40 descriptor states to differentiate the two species; these studies were highlighted with an aim to facilitate field identification of these taxa. Key diagnostic characters are presented for identification of these two species.
Morphological characters can be successfully utilized in the identification of Ammi visnaga (L.) Lam. and Ammi majus L. Ammi species with an objective to assess the taxonomic significance of morphological and micro-morphological traits with respect to the species to develop an identification key for the benefit of Botanists, Plant explorers, Crop curators, Breeders and other Researchers.
