Classical plant taxonomy at a crossroads in the 21st century?
Abstract
Taxonomy is the science concerned with the discovery, description, naming, and classification of organisms. It provides a standardized framework for documenting plant diversity and supports research in ecology, conservation, agriculture, medicine and environmental management. Plant taxonomy assumes particular importance at a time of rapid biodiversity loss and increasing pressure on natural resources. Despite its fundamental role, classical plant taxonomy faces declining institutional support, reduced training opportunities, and shifting research priorities toward laboratory-based disciplines. The present account examines the current state of classical plant taxonomy, highlights the challenges confronting the discipline, and emphasizes its continued relevance for biodiversity assessment and sustainable utilization of plant resources.
