Abstract
69% sceds of J raritinus geminaied in 24 dS m' scawater but higher concentrations inhibited the process. Kecovery of the seeds subjccted to 32 and 48 dS.m' seawater was quite high. The Ausiralian species J acutus exhibitcd only 17% genmination in 8 ds.m -1 and no gemination bey ond this level. Alanime, asparagine, aspartic acid, glut.amic acid, pheny lalanine, proline. glutamine, glycine, senne and threonine constituted major iraction of amino acids in 40 day old seedlings. Concentrations of aspuragine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and proline increased while those ot glvcine, pheny lal anine and serine decreased in response to salinity stress. However, the total amount of the amino acids increased under saline condition. Seaw ater caused a slight reduction in total and reducing sugars and in amounts of glacose, galactose and arabinose in both the species.
